Abraham Ortelius. Islandia. 1590.

The first real stand-alone map of Iceland. Published by Abraham Ortelius in 1590 in the fourth supplement to the atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570). The map was drawn using information on place names and outlines of the country provided by the Icelandic bishop Guðbrandur Þorláksson (1541-1627). On the back of the map the various sea monsters around Iceland are briefly explained. Many of them are given Icelandic names, such as Hroshualur (G) (Horse whale) and Seenaut (K) (Sea cow), which belong to Icelandic folklore. Other depicted creatures are distorted sea mammals, such as Rostunger (N) (Walrus), Steipereidur (L) (Blue whale) and Staukul (M) (Bottlenose dolphin).

Sizes 40 x 50 cm and 50x70cm
